Prince Brincoveanu said something to the older man in Romanian and the man took one last startled look at Jessie before rushing off to do his master’s bidding. The Prince said nothing further, but his eyes found Jessie’s and held them. She knew that hers were filled with so many unanswered questions. His were unreadable.

Roman broke the silence, reaching for Lili’s hand. “You look beautiful tonight,” he told her before turning to Jessie. “And Miss Seville, I am happy to see that you are feeling well enough to join us.”

As his gaze came to rest on Jessie, a flash of amusement brightened his eyes.

“Come, let me introduce you to my uncle.” Roman took both their hands and led them to where the Prince stood. “Uncle, this is Lili Von Eyssen, the young woman that I have told you so much about. And this is her friend, Jessie Seville.” The expression of triumph on Roman’s face was soon replaced by surprise at the Prince’s next words.

“Hello, Miss Seville. It’s good to see that there are no visible scars from your night in Bourdaqueste.” At the startled expressions on both Lili and Roman’s face, the Prince went on to explain. "Miss Seville and I have already met, two nights ago in Bourdaqueste.” He turned his attention then to Lili and away from the curiosity in his nephew’s eyes.

“Miss Von Eyssen. I apologize for leaving you so abruptly last night. It is a pleasure to be officially introduced to you. I knew your aunt very well, she was a special lady.” He took Lili’s hand and brought it slowly to his lips, his eyes never leaving Jessie.

“Thank you, Prince Brincoveanu. I’m happy to meet you as well. Did I hear you correctly? You said that you and Jessie have met before, the other night. I didn’t realize...why didn’t you tell me this, Jess?” Lili was slowly recovering from some of her shock. Her forehead wrinkled in confusion as she watched Jessie.

Jessie took her time answering, trying to steady her voice. “I wasn’t sure that the Prince was the same person...the same person I met in Bourdaqueste, that is.”

“I think Miss Seville was hoping to forget what happened that night.”

Lili looked from the Prince to Jessie in shock. “Well, now I’m intrigued. What exactly did happen in Bourdaqueste, Jessie?”

“Nothing, thank God, but I think I came very close that night. Too close.”

It was almost surreal, standing this close to him, while those frightening images of another life—her life—rushed through her mind. Jessie wanted more than anything to be alone with him. To ask him what was happening to her. To plead with him to help her understand. To ask him why, after all these years, he’d brought her back to him.

“Yes, you did. And yet I wonder if you realize the danger you came so close to, even now.”

His warning had absolutely nothing to do with the two boys who threatened her life. He was warning her against delving too deeply into truths she was desperate to discover.
